This is FreeRateUpdate News. I'm Edmund Ledger. Today's question: how long does it take to close a mortgage or HELOC?

A HELOC or home equity loan without a full appraisal can close in a few days to about two weeks.

A mortgage that needs an in-person appraisal more often takes three to four weeks, and VA loans commonly take longer.

You have to receive your Closing Disclosure at least three business days before you close on a mortgage.

On an eligible refinance, HELOC, or home equity loan secured by your main home, you have a right to cancel.

You get three business days, counted after signing and the required disclosures.

If the lender needs an in-person appraisal, that can add a week or two to the timeline.
